The course is a first approach of materials: principal groups of materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, composites) are addressed from macroscopic properties point of view as well as interatomic liaisons. After a brief general presentation of the solid state and mechanical properties of materials, the solidification of metals and alloys is explained, with applications to iron-carbon alloys.

-       Materials : definitions, principal classes, production, price.

-       The solid state: liaisons and properties.

-       Mechanical properties of materials: definitions, measures.

Materials and alloys solidification: thermodynamics of states changes, variance, phases diagrams, germination and growth

Written examination at the end of the semester (3h).
